Hearing Loss and Age

Hearing impaired people with no instrument often have difficulty communicating with relatives, friends and colleagues and often feel isolated as a result. Although it is more common in older adults, many middle age and younger people are affected as well. There are many determining factors beyond just age.

According to the most recently available National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data, while most people with loss of hearing are older folks who have lost it with age, approximately 12 out of every 1,000 persons are under 18 years of age.

A MarkeTrak survey (2004) estimated that 31.5 million people report difficulty; that is, around 10% of the U.S. population.

  • 3 in 10 people over age 60.
  • 1 in 6 baby boomers (ages 41-59), or 14.6%.
  • 1 in 14 Generation Xers (ages 29-40), or 7.4%.
  • At least 1.4 million children (18 or younger).
  • It is estimated that 3 in 1,000 infants are born with serious to profound hearing loss.

Hearing Aids Make a Difference

grandmother reading to her grandchildrenStudies have shown that instruments contribute to improvements in the wearers' quality of life as well as their hearing. 70 percent of the respondents in a German study found that their enjoyment of everyday life improved after they were fitted with digital hearing aids.

Over the past few years, tremendous advancements have been made in instrument technology. They offer a superior level of sound quality contained in tiny instruments, practically invisible to most observers.

Why Would I Choose AHPI to Help Me?

Expertise in hearing instrument sciences

While any licensed dispenser can perform a test and prescribe instruments, it takes someone very knowledgeable and practiced in hearing instrument sciences to be able to make the various adjustments and address a wide range of fitting issues. This requires special skill and craftsmanship.

Jim Downing, BC-HIS, owner and president of Advanced Hearing Plus, Inc., is nationally board certified in hearing instrument sciences. Jim has earned an outstanding reputation for honesty, integrity, and compassionate, knowledgeable care.

Expertise in many instrument brands

Jim is unique in this field. He maintains a high level of expertise for a wide variety of brands; in fact, most major brands are offered in our store. This is very unusual. Most dispensers concentrate their skills on one or two lines of instruments.

Individualized help so you may hear better

We believe that everyone is an individual, with very individualized needs. Not all manufacturers address every need, so we believe it is important to be able to be flexible and offer a variety of choices. We are happy to be able to provide this kind of help to our community.

We want you to be part of our Family Hearing Center! So, please call or come visit us. We will give you a free hearing exam, demonstrate different instruments, and provide you with information about them and their uses. See for yourself the quality of our hearing aid and ALD products and services we provide to keep both you and your instrument in top working order.
