Hello Everyone,

Fall is in the air.  Isn't wonderful to have the change of seasons?  Some changes are definitely ones to look forward to.  Speaking of changes, we will be making a bit of a change to our office.  We are getting new neighbors in the office next to ours, and they require more space.  So, the extra space we have been wanting to sublease will be annexed to them.  The Gateway Marketplace management will be walling off part of our office, giving it to the place
next door.  We'll be doing some shuffling around, and outfitting our office with some beautiful, comfortable leather furniture.  We think you all will enjoy the changes we'll be  making.

Changes in technology are another good kind of change.  Unitron is coming out with an in-the-ear wireless CROS system.  For those who have an unaidable ear, but need amplification in their other ear, they now have the option of an in-the-ear WIRELESS system.  Before, those with a CROS system had to rely upon a behind-the-ear style with a cord connecting the hearing aid to the other side that housed the mic-only aid.   The wireless BTE style has been available for a little while now, and has proven to be very successful.  It's available with several of Unitron's digital circuits, providing a good range of affordable options.  Now, with the in-the-ear style being offered, it will be even more versatile.

As you know, we've been very happy with the Unitron Moda open-air hearing system.  We have found it to be very flexible and comfortable while providing great listening enhancement.  The Moda system is a premier digital hearing instrument, but we are able to offer it at considerably less than a premier digital price!  In addition, we will be extending our special sale price on this instrument, for added savings, through November 30, 2005.

Getting the Most out of Your Hearing Aids
                                                                            (Continued)

When adjusting to new hearing instruments, it is very helpful if one sets goals to measure their progress.  This helps you see how much you are improving, and also helps your dispenser know what works for you and what areas need adjustment.  It's helpful to write down your top five goals---usually these are situations in which you need to hear better.  At your first follow-up visit, show these goals and your rating of improvement to the dispenser so that he/she knows best how to help you.  During the next two to three weeks, continue to rate your goals, and then bring your notes to your next office visit if you need further adjustments.  These notes will enable you to compare your progress over the weeks as you adjust to your new aids.

Your five goals to hearing better can be chosen from the following categories:
          1.  Conversation with 1 or 2 in quiet             9.  Hear front door bell or
          2.  Conversation with 1 or 2 in noise           10.  Hear traffic

          3.  Conversation with group in quiet            11.  Increased social contact
          4.  Conversation with group in noise           12.  Feel less embarrassed or stupid
          5.  TV/Radio at normal volume                   13.  Feel less left out

          6.  Familiar speaker on phone                     14.  Feel less upset or angry
          7.  Unfamiliar speaker on phone                 15.  Church or meetin
          8.  Hearing phone ring from other room     16.  Other

Once you choose your five top categories, list them in a column along the left side of your paper.  On the right side you will rate your progress in each chosen category accordingly:
Worse, No Difference, Slightly Better, Better, Much Better.
Next to that, rate your final ability with your hearing aid in each chosen category, accordingly:
You can hear Hardly Ever (10%), Occasionally (25%), Half the Time (50%),
Most of Time (75%), Almost Always (95%).

Next month, we will finish this series with some instructions for keeping a hearing diary during your adjustment phase.

As always, your questions and comments are welcome.  Last month, one of our readers emailed me a good suggestion to remind you that sometimes the DMV requests hearing exams in order to renew your license.  This is true especially if you are renewing your CDL.  It's a good idea to get a yearly hearing exam, anyway.  If there are any changes to your hearing, your dispenser can make adjustments to your digital instruments at that time.
