Hello, everyone!

Fathers Day remembranceSummer is trying to make an entrance here in Oregon, but it still feels more like spring with showers off and on.

Hope you all are enjoying lovely weather and all the fun things that go with the summer season!

New Hearing Devices and Your Assignment!

We continue to introduce new products to our patients in our effort to help them achieve better, more comfortable hearing. Even with all the new technology and nifty features in the latest products, hearing aids will only work with the remaining hearing one has. So, in an effort to help our patients achieve even better success and greater satisfaction from their personal hearing devices, we have started to give our patients an assignment along with their new hearing aids. This simple assignment will help them achieve better success with and realize greater satisfaction from their new personal hearing devices.

Leading audiologist Dr. Jay B. McSpaden

We must credit Dr. Jay B. McSpaden, a leading audiologist, for this assignment idea. He requires all of his patients to do this assignment faithfully for the first 30-45 days. Dr. McSpaden tells his patients that if they will do this, "then 1 year from now, you will wonder how you ever questioned the value of hearing aids."

This assignment is so easy and doesn't cost a penny. Ready? OK! While wearing your hearing devices, read out loud, in a normal conversational voice for at least 30-45 minutes every day. This is crucial to one's aural rehabilitation.

Reading out loud and phonemes

Dr. McSpaden suggests reading Dr. Seuss' books out loud because of the alliteration used throughout his works. But, one can choose anything—a favorite book, magazine, the Bible. The point is to help one's brain recognize and comprehend the phonemes—a letter or group of letters that has a specific sound in our language. For instance, "th" is pronounced differently in the words "three" and "those".

When a person starts to wear hearing aids after not hearing for awhile, his/her brain needs to be trained to hear and recognize the different phonemes. This will give the brain the information it needs to better understand speech—like it used to receive before hearing loss. Then, communication will become easier and more enjoyable once again.

The role of repetition and more accurate hearing

So, the whole point of reading aloud isn't necessarily to understand the content of what one is reading, but to help the brain achieve more accurate hearing. While one reads aloud while wearing their hearing devices, one's brain knows exactly what one is saying out loud. There is no ambiguity. Repetition will allow the brain to become familiar with the sound of the phonemes, and allow the brain to assign meaning to the words. The end result: accurate hearing.
