NewsletterJune 2007 |
Hello, everyone! |
 |
We hope everyone had a safe Memorial Day weekend. Here it is June already! Wow, this year is zipping by!
Things are getting busier at our office. We've been making more friends and helping more people with their hearing needs. It's been exciting! | |

Keeping you informed
Professor of Psychology, Lawrence D. Rosenblum of UC Riverside, along with two of his graduate students, Rachel M. Miller and Kauyumari Sanchez, have conducted a study that proves that seeing a person's face does indeed make it easier to hear them. We know this to be true for many of our hard-of-hearing patients. It's important to remember that a hearing aid is a device that enhances one's hearing, improving it, but not restoring it. Most hearing challenged people read lips and rely on other clues without even being aware of it.
This study showed that more than reading lips is involved. Facial expressions also provide important clues to the conversation, revealing the speaker's characteristics and speaking style, which help to better understand the whole context of what is being said—so important in communication. But, even beyond that, when we are familiar with a speaker, we become accustomed to their speaking style, which also makes it easier to hear them.
The article may be accessed at the Medical News Today web site.
Trouble using a cell phone?
Here's an important tip! If your hearing aid does not have a TCoil, you'll need an M-4 type of cell phone, regardless of manufacturer. If your hearing aid does have a TCoil, you'll need a T-4 type of cell phone.
Spiders in your ear?
Hear about the boy who had spiders in his ear?! We see a lot of ear canals, but have never run across anything like that, and evidently neither had his doctor! Anyhow, a 9 year old boy up in Albany, OR kept complaining of an earache, so his mother took him to the doctor. Upon examining the boy's ear, the doctor saw something down in it. When he flushed the ear, the spiders came out. The crackling sound the boy had been experiencing in his ear ("like Rice Krispies") stopped. What a thing, huh?!
Recorded music even louder than 5 years ago.
Did you know that music that is recorded today plays a lot louder than recorded music did 20 years ago—or even 10 or 5 years ago?! Part of the "logic" behind producing louder music is that the louder the music, the more it will stand out, getting more attention and air time over the radio waves. Go figure! Believe it or not—and I can believe it—CDs today register a good 16 dBs higher than those made in 1980, and about 4 times as loud!
Now, you think—well, just turn the volume down, right? Wrong. The music on today's CDs isn't just louder, it's compressed. Everything is turned up as high as possible so that there is little difference between the quiet and loud sounds. In fact, some CDs today are recorded at such a loud level that they are distorted.
Just a cautionary note. |
