Tinnitus News

It's been estimated that 10-15% of the population in our country suffers from chronic or persistent tinnitus. Half of those folks report being bothered by the internal head noise that tinnitus generates; and 1% of those folks indicate that tinnitus affects their lives substantially.

The fact is tinnitus can have a profound affect on one's life on many levels, interfering with socialization and relaxation. Some folks have such a severe case of tinnitus that they become quite distraught with depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, anger, even suicidal desires.

There is ongoing research devoted to this perplexing malady, and from time to time, we like to update our readers with the latest news on this front.

Some of the methods recommended for tinnitus relief involve taking various supplements and avoiding certain foods such as salt and caffeine.

Effect of Caffeine Intake on Tinnitus

I was happily surprised by the results of one of the latest studies which revealed that avoiding caffeine does not relieve tinnitus! Now, it may seem strange to be happy about that, but if you are a person who enjoys your coffee, tea or chocolate, you would be glad to not have that deprivation imposed upon you. So … good news for many folks, from that perspective. Furthermore, this study discovered that acute caffeine withdrawal may actually exacerbate the problem!

The study, which was conducted by the Centre for Hearing and Balance Studies at Bristol University, is the first study of its kind to look at the effect of caffeine intake on tinnitus, and was published in the International Journal of Audiology.

It's bad enough to have tinnitus, but to also have to forego some of the pleasures of life like a good cup o' Joe or Earl Gray—not to mention a beloved addiction to dark chocolate—seems to add insult to injury. Needless to say, I'm sure this study brings much relief and comfort to many!

What Can I Do About Tinnitus?

There still needs to be vigilance, however, in order to avoid becoming plagued with tinnitus or to not worsen tinnitus already present. Avoiding situations where extreme noise is present, wearing hearing protection when attending loud concerts or working with loud machinery, etc. are good, worthwhile measures for anyone to take ... but especially those dealing with tinnitus.
