January 2009

Hello, everyone!
Happy New Year! We wish you all a very prosperous and productive 2009!

Hope you all had a good Christmas/Hanukah with your friends and families.
Happy New Year

Some New Year's Resolutions

  1. Schedule an appointment for a hearing test. It's good to have a base-line hearing test. Then, every year or so, get a test update to keep track of your hearing.
  2. Be more pro-active in protecting your hearing this year. Use hearing protection when using noisy equipment, attending loud concerts, using iPods, etc. It will save you a lot of grief and money down the road!

If you currently wear hearing instruments, plan on marking your calendar at every 3 or 4 month intervals for professional cleanings. This will help prolong the life of your hearing aids.
  3. Consider trying out some new technology. If your hearing instruments are several years old, it is probably time for an upgrade. Keep your current aids for back-up.
  4. Encourage your loved ones to take care of their hearing, to schedule hearing tests, and to wear their hearing instruments!
  5. If you have older hearing instruments that you no longer are using, consider donating these to the LIONS organization. Like glasses, they refurbish used hearing aids for those in need.

Hearing Loss, Stress and Relationships

Hearing loss can put stress on relationships. Those who live with hearing loss will attest to that. It's stressful for the one with the loss as well as for those who try to communicate with that person.

Energizer Battery Survey

Energizer Battery conducted a survey among Baby Boomers last March, and found some interesting results. The survey polled 1065 people, both men and women, ages 44 to 62. The survey has an overall sampling error rate of ± 3% at the 95% level of confidence.

Here are the findings of that survey:
  1. Being hard of hearing can cause hard feelings. Nearly 7 out of 10 admitted to being annoyed when their spouse can't hear them. 16.4% feel ignored; 81% feel sad or hurt.
  2. Raised voices become more common. Over half reported that they find themselves daily talking louder so that their spouse can hear them. Also, 83.4% believe that if they talk louder, their spouse will better understand them.
  3. Hearing loss or selective hearing? A majority said that their spouse can hear them fix a snack, but less than half believe that their spouse doesn't hear chore requests!
  4. Nearly half believe that their spouse is in denial about their hearing loss. Of those surveyed, 56.8% believe that their spouse is reluctant to get their hearing checked.
  5. The survey found that few have had their hearing screened.
Bottom line: Hearing loss affects more than the person who experiences it. Here's hoping that this new year will be the year that more folks will seek the help they need for better hearing and communication!
